General Description:
The New England Slalom Series (NESS) is a whitewater slalom series designed and run for racers in open boats, as well as C/D and unranked closed boats. Our series warmly welcomes people of all ages and abilities, from those who are complete beginners in whitewater slalom racing, to those who race regularly for fun and excitement, as well as national champions who are in the area and want to join us.
All races are sanctioned by the ACA, and points earned count toward national rankings. Open canoe paddlers from this series commonly compete and place at the annual Open Boat Nationals. Others have gone on to compete in A/B races and Closed Boat Nationals. We also are proud that training programs use NESS to develop their paddlers, some of whom have gone on to compete in national and international competitions as members of the U.S. Team in the sports of whitewater slalom and whitewater rodeo. NESS is a nine race series and each participant can enter up to three classes at each race. Prizes are awarded at each race and there are series awards presented at the final race in the fall for those who have participated in the required number of races. Special participation awards are given to those racers who complete a minimum of one race run in each of the 9 races in the series. At the end of each race, there is a drawing for a certificate good for free entry in up to three classes at one of the next two races in the series. Any participating racer present at the awards ceremony is eligible to win. |

Rules and Guidlines:
| Each New England Slalom Series race allows a maximum of 125 entries. NESS will generally follow the USACK slalom racing rules for Closed Boats and the ACA Open Canoe Slalom racing rules for Open Boats. All boats must have flotation and all paddlers must wear PFDs & Helmets. |
| NOTICE: This season the NESS races will continue, a policy started two years ago, ranking the results of it's races by using the better to the two race runs for each competitor. However, it is no longer just a policy of NESS, as the USA Canoe/Kayak Slalom Racing Rules that became efective as of January 1, 2009, have adopted "the better of the two runs" also! It seems that the ICF and USACK have now caught up to NESS! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
All races are sanctioned by the American Canoe Association and NESS uses their insurance carrier. Therefore all participants must complete and sign the waiver. ACA members with a valid number are covered as part of their membership benefits. Non-members must pay the $5 event fee for each race they enter. As of 2005, USACK members that were exempt from ACA Event Membership charges will now also have to pay the $5 fee. ACA New England Paddle American Club, ACANE, is continuing to provide ACA New England members a $10 discount, a 25% savings, on individual and family ACA annual memberships. To qualify you must be an ACANE member - but membership in ACANE is FREE! You may contact webhead@canoe-newengland.org to join the ACANE and qualify for this discount on your ACA membership for this year. |
Series Awards:
| The NESS is a nine race series. Points from each race are recorded and accumulated for the series standings. To qualify for a Series award, racers must compete in at least 5 races in the same class. The best 5 finishes determine each racer's series standing, with the final race of the year, the Farmington Slalom as tie-breaker if necessary. Racers may enter a maximum of 3 classes per race, and are therefore eligible for up to 3 series awards. A special participation award is given to each racer who completes at least one race run in each of the 9 races in the series. At the end of each race, there is a drawing for a certificate good for free entry into one of the next two races in the series. Any participating racer present at the awards ceremony is eligible to win! The certificate is good for up to three classes, is not transferable, and may not be used for late registration. |
| If a single race is canceled, there will be no change in eligibility for series awards. If two or three races are canceled, a racer's best 4 finishes will determine series standing. If four or five races are canceled, a racers best 3 finishes will determine series standing. If six or seven races are canceled, a racer's best 2 finishes will determine series standing. If more than seven races are canceled, a racer's best finish in any one race will determine series standing. If necessary, the final race of the year, the Farmington Slalom, is the tie-breaker. |
| The rating (Class I, II, etc.) for each race is to be used as a general guideline. The actual difficulty of the courses may vary due to multiple variables, such as course design or changing water levels. Please contact the race organizer if you have any questions. Each race information page has a link to a RaceCourse video associated with each eventto help you ascess it's difficulty. Click here for a seperate video links page. |
Registration Information:
To register for each race, print a copy of the race application and insurance form accessed below, and send both completed forms with a check for the entry fee to the race chairperson to arrive within the entry window.
